Leadership and Performance: Aiden Derkack’s Impact at Colonia High School

Aiden Derkack has established himself as a formidable force in the Colonia High School boys’ basketball team, excelling not just in statistics but as a pivotal leader. This season, he dominated in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and steals, showcasing his all-around abilities on the court. His journey began with a standout freshman year, followed by a championship in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament during his sophomore year. As a junior, he stepped into a leadership position, guiding a team that included two new starters with limited experience and several newcomers.

Record-Breaking Achievements

For his exceptional contributions, Derkack has been honored as the Home News Tribune Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive time. Under his leadership, the Patriots achieved a remarkable school record of 27 wins, clinching the Red Division title, securing back-to-back GMCT championships, and maintaining a streak of four consecutive sectional titles. His scoring average surged from 20.0 to 24.7 points per game, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the team’s total offense. Additionally, he recorded 8.1 rebounds per game and set a personal best by hitting 25 three-pointers this season. With a total of 1,739 points, he has become the leading scorer in the school’s history, surpassing all except his sister, Taylor, who holds the overall record with 2,082 points.

Reflecting on Success and Future Aspirations

Despite the team’s goals not being fully realized, Derkack remains optimistic. “While we didn’t finish as we had hoped, it was still a commendable year for us,” he remarked, focusing on the team’s youth and potential for growth with only one senior graduating. He expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming season. On a personal note, he modestly assessed his performance, stating, “I believe I had a solid year and was pleased with my contributions. We made a statement this season, even if we didn’t achieve everything we aimed for.”

Coaching Praise and Leadership Development

Colonia coach Jose Rodriguez offered high praise for Derkack, describing the season as one of the best in the school’s history. Rodriguez noted that the expectations for Derkack’s performance were met due to his growth since his freshman year. Derkack’s approach to leadership is team-focused. He set collective goals, including winning another GMCT title and aiming for the state Group 3 championship, intentionally not listing the sectional title as a personal goal. “We agreed as a team that this is our new standard,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of fostering camaraderie and brotherhood within the team.

The Evolution of a Leader

Embracing his role as a leader marked a significant step in Derkack’s development. He acknowledged the necessity of being both supportive and assertive when required. Influenced by Rodriguez’s guidance, he sought advice from younger teammates, such as sophomore Dylan Chiera, who plays quarterback on the football team. Rodriguez noted Derkack’s increased vocal presence during games, highlighting his ability to rally teammates. “He’s incredibly talented and skilled, but he also took on a greater emphasis on winning,” Rodriguez remarked.

Adapting to Challenges and Future Prospects

Rodriguez also encouraged Derkack to adopt a more aggressive offensive style rather than depending solely on his improving shooting skills. This led Derkack to consistently drive to the basket, although a late-season ankle sprain impacted his ability to do so. “I was unable to manage it as well as I wanted,” he stated, reflecting on the mental challenges that arose during this critical phase of the season.

Scholarship Opportunities and College Decisions

As a result of his impressive performance, Derkack has received 11 scholarship offers, with the potential for more during the AAU season while representing Team Final in Philadelphia. He is focused on visiting schools and building relationships with coaches to ensure he makes the right choice for his future. “The biggest factor for me is establishing a strong connection with the coaching staff and finding a team that feels like family,” he noted, with interest from schools like Xavier, Providence, Miami, Rutgers, Villanova, TCU, Merrimack, and Bryant among others.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future

With one more year to work together, Rodriguez is eager to continue guiding Derkack. Despite his successful season, Derkack remains driven to improve, seeking challenges to elevate his game. “He aspires to be recognized as one of the top players from this area and certainly among the best in New Jersey’s basketball history,” Rodriguez concluded.
